About South Carolina

South Carolina is one of the most popular states in America as it’s located in the southern region of the country and sits on the Atlantic Ocean. It originally belonged to the province of Carolina, which was one of the 13 colonies to declare independence from Britain in the American Revolution. South Carolina was the eighth state to join the Union back in 1788 and was the founding member of the Confederate States of America. It seceded during the Civil War and was readmitted afterwards.

It’s now the 40th-largest state in area and ranked 24th when it comes to population with just over 4.5 million residents. The city of Columbia is both the largest in the state as well as its capital. Other major cities include Greenville, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Rock Hill, Mount Pleasant, Sumter, Summerville, Florence, Hilton Head Island, and Spartanburg.

The state’s quite beautiful as it’s filled with lakes, mountains, forests, beaches, and bays. To get a good view of the scenery you might want to

take a trip down the Cherokee Parkway scenic d route and check out Table Rock State Park, Caesars Head State Park, and the Chattooga River, where you can enjoy the excitement of whitewater rafting. Another thing that attracts visitors is the great climate the state enjoys. The summers are typically hot and humid while the winters are pretty mild

The charming and historic city of Charleston seems to be preserved in time as it has narrow, cobble stone streets and gives off an aura of another era. Myrtle Beach, which sits on the coast, is one of the most popular golfing areas in the country and attracts golfers, swimmers, and beach lovers from all over the world. Hilton Head Island is almost as famous as it sits just off the coast of the state and allows visitors to take part in an assortment of aquatic activities along with more golf courses.

Some of the most popular national parks are Charles Pinckney National Historic Site, Congaree National Park, Cowpens National Battlefield, Fort Moultrie National Monument, Fort Sumter National Monument, Kings Mountain National Military, Ninety Six National Historic Site, and Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail.

Driving’s a piece of cake in South Carolina as the road system is top notch and easy to navigate. There’s also a pretty good rail system with stations in places such as Camden, Charleston, Columbia, Clemson, Denmark, Dillon, Florence, Greenville, Kingstree, Spartanburg, and Yemassee. There are several small airports around the state, but the major international ones are located in Charleston, Greenville, and Myrtle Beach. You can also land in North Carolina in Charlotte.

Sports are very popular in South Carolina, but there aren’t any major-league pro franchises. However, the NFL and NHL teams that are based in North Carolina represent both North and South Carolina. There are quite a few minor-league pro franchises in baseball, soccer, and hockey, and college sports are big. NASCAR racing is also huge and of course, so are water sports and golf as there are about 100 courses available.

There are hundreds of excellent places to stay when visiting from motels to top-class resorts. The good thing is you’ll be able to find something comfortable that fits all budgets. There are also plenty of wonderful restaurants to try both regional dishes and international cuisine. There are a lot of superb fresh seafood dishes to try and other popular southern cuisine as well as international food.

South Carolina is an ideal location for sports enthusiasts and lovers of the outdoors, history, and the sea and sand. There are plenty of things to do and see for travellers of all ages and interests.
